The Return of the Gender-Swapped Sage Chapter 27

The scar-eyed giant wolf carried Xue Ji deep into the forest, where she could clearly sense the rising density of spiritual energy. The phoenix feather fused with her soul stirred once more, greedily absorbing the rich ambient energy. Ever since her awakening, Xue Ji had been using self-generated magic converted into spiritual power. She had tried absorbing external energy before, but the breathing techniques taught by the Special Forces had failed utterly. At first, she thought the methods simply didn’t suit her—only to realize the problem had always been her.

As spiritual energy flowed into her, Xue Ji noticed most of it was being drawn toward the phoenix feather, with only scattered wisps absorbed by her body. With each pulse of energy, the feather grew more vibrant, while Xue Ji herself remained unchanged—or so it seemed. The feather’s absorption wasn’t entirely one-sided; it fed warm currents back into her body. These currents coursed through her organs and limbs, tempering her fragile mortal frame like a blacksmith reforging steel.

The sensation was akin to soaking in a hot spring. Lulled by the soothing warmth, Xue Ji—against all common sense—drifted asleep on the giant wolf’s back.

Scar-Eye nearly howled with glee. This foolish human actually fell asleep on me?! It would be a disgrace to its sprinting efforts if it didn’t deliver her straight into the Wolf King’s belly.

By the time they reached the forest’s heart, a spirit-laden lake shimmered under the moonlight. Over a thousand giant wolves lined the shore, their gazes fixed on the mist-shrouded center of the water. From within the fog came pained growls, accompanied by the shadow of a ten-meter-tall figure. When Scar-Eye arrived, the colossal silhouette suddenly raised its head and unleashed a deafening roar.

The pack stirred nervously. Their king had sensed a threat—but where? Noses twitching, the wolves soon pinpointed the source: Scar-Eye and its unconscious cargo.

“Awoo? (What did you bring back?)”

Scar-Eye puffed out its chest. “Awoo! (A stupid human. A gift to aid our king’s breakthrough!)”

“Awoo! Awooo! (The king is afraid of a sleeping human?!)”

“Awoo. Awoo! (Nerves before ascension are normal. Once he devours her, he’ll advance for sure!)”

Convinced by this logic, the pack howled in unison toward the lake: “Awoo~ (Scar-Eye brings tribute, oh great king!)”

The Wolf King’s response was immediate. As the “gift’s” terrifying aura drew nearer, it scraped its claws frantically against the ground, teeth grinding loud enough to echo across the water. Of all the imbecilic underlings—this fool just doomed the entire pack!

With a thunderous roar, it silenced the chorus:

“AWOOO!!! (MAKE THAT IDIOT SCAR-EYE LEAVE!!! NOW!!!)”

The pack hesitated, but none dared defy their ruler. Just as they began nudging Scar-Eye away, however, the commotion jolted Xue Ji awake.

Her eyes flew open to a sea of giant wolves.

“Holy—how did I fall asleep?!” She wiped drool from her cheek, heart pounding at the near-miss of becoming wolf chow. Swinging off Scar-Eye’s back, she studied the pack’s behavior—and burst out laughing. They’re scared of me?

She patted the clueless Scar-Eye. “What happened while I was out?”

The wolf’s ears flattened. “Awoo… (Our king refuses to see you.)”

How amusing. Xue Ji’s gaze pierced the lake’s mist, golden light swirling in her pupils. There, cowering on an island, was the Wolf King—a massive beast currently trying (and failing) to hide behind its own paws. Its glare at Scar-Eye could’ve melted stone. You’ve signed my death warrant, you moron!

Xue Ji couldn’t contain her grin. Scar-Eye, misreading her amusement as disrespect, bristled with misplaced courage:

“Awoo! (Know your place, human!)”

From the lake, the Wolf King mentally drafted its resignation letter. Does this idiot not smell the divine beast aura rolling off her?!

“Oho? Challenging me now?” Xue Ji’s fingers crackled with dark energy as she activated Blood Rite. The oppressive aura sent the pack into defensive formations, surrounding her completely.

When tensions peaked, Fenrir’s Dirge echoed once more. The lament of a primordial predator seeped into every wolf’s mind, freezing even the king’s limbs mid-tremble.

With the pack now groveling at her feet, Xue Ji sighed and began stepping over them toward the lake. Each wolf she trod upon suffered twin agonies: soul-crushing shame, and the pungent horror of human foot odor (she’d removed her shoes for better grip). Their collective glare at Scar-Eye promised aquatic retribution.

Upon reaching the island, she found the Wolf King prostrated like a subject awaiting royalty.

Her telepathic voice rang clear:

“Let’s make a deal, your majesty.”

“What… deal?”

But as Xue Ji opened her mouth, chaotic energy surged within her. The words that came out were laced with unintended arrogance: “I demand your entire pack’s submission.” By the time she registered the slip, the Wolf King was already airborne.

ROOOOAR!!!

The king had braced for many outcomes—even personal servitude to spare its people. But eternal enslavement for its species? Never.

Rage overpowered even Fenrir’s terror. Jaws wide enough to swallow an elephant lunged for Xue Ji, who barely matched the size of its fangs. As the Dirge’s hold broke, she channeled pure spiritual energy into her palms.

Mist and frost engulfed the island. Ice spread across the lake.

The battle between monarch and mage had begun.
